Target Group This award is aimed at a variety of learners with individual abilities, interests, motivations and aspirations. The learners will have special educational needs and are working towards entry level 1 of the national curriculum programme of study for science. The qualification is targeted towards learners aged 14 years and over.
Summary The OCNW Award in Sceince at pre-entry level is designed for learners who are working below national curriculum entry level 1 of the programme of study for science. It give learners recognition for their learning when used with diagnostic tests, it can be used to focus learning and to promote progression.
Assessment

Internal assessment will be through building up a portfolio of evidence for each learner. Portfolios may include a variety of evidence to demonstrate that the learning outcomes within a unit have been achieved.

Examples of evidence that could be used to demonstrate achievement include:

Observation records

Scribing

Tape recordings

Photographs

Video

Peer witnessing / statements

Production of evidence

Due to the wide variation in the capabilities of the learners, the evidence generated to demonstrate achievement of  the learning outcomes is likely to be different with each learner. Particularly at the lower levels, the evidence will largely be recorded by the tutors, carers and support workers, whilst at the higher levels, the learners may begin to create their own evidence.
