Summary

The Additional Diploma in Teaching Mathematics (Numeracy) in the Lifelong Learning Sector is designed for teachers or potential teachers who wish to specialise in the teaching of Mathematics (Numeracy). It has been designed primarily for partly qualified teachers or teachers that already hold a recognised teaching qualification, but one which is not contextualised to the teaching of Numeracy.

The diploma is appropriate for teachers, tutors and trainers who may be working within an FE college, Adult and Community Learning Centre or Learning Provider and for those delivering work based training such as within voluntary, community, private and public organisations.

The diploma explores numeracy acquisition and use, the barriers to numeracy acquisition and development and the theories and principles of numeracy learning. It then focuses on the learning and teaching of numeracy through the planning, selection and development of approaches to numeracy learning for a range of learner types.

Teaching practice is a requirement of this qualification.

There are several features of the diploma making it appropriate to the target candidates:

§         OCNW-devised assessment tasks designed to cover all the assessment criteria within the unit;

§         The assessment strategy, a combination of the Personal and Professional Practice File (3PF) and assessment tasks, is a distinctive and holistic approach to the assessment requirements of the Additional Diploma and highly relevant to candidates working or intending to work with numeracy learners;

§         Centre-devised assessment tasks are permissible provided they are approved by OCNW before commencement of delivery;

§         Can be achieved by pre-service or in-service candidates.

Assessment

To achieve the diploma evidence of achievement of all the assessment criteria must be demonstrated, together with at least 75 hours of teaching practice.

OCNW-devised assessment strategy is the Personal and Professional Practice File (3PF) and assessment tasks. The 3PF is a dynamic document that encourages a holistic approach to the Diploma programme and develops incrementally as the candidate progresses through the programme. Units of assessment have been mapped to the 3PF and assessment tasks are included within some units, covering all the assessment criteria of the unit and the normal expectation is that these would be completed by candidates.  The 3PF and assessment tasks are designed to meet the needs of candidates working or intending to work within a wide range of learning environments within the Lifelong Learning Sector. Centre-devised assessment tasks are permissible, providing there is a rationale for these; they will need to be approved by OCNW prior to delivery.

All assessment tasks should be internally moderated within the centre. OCNW will arrange external moderation at a time convenient to the centre, and certification is available throughout the year.
