The Additional Diploma in teaching English (Literacy) in the Lifelong Learning Sector is designed for teachers or potential teachers who wish to specialise in the teaching of English (Literacy). It has been designed primarily for partly qualified teachers or teachers that already hold a recognised teaching qualification, but one which is not contextualised to the teaching of Literacy.
The diploma is appropriate for teachers, tutors and trainers who may be working within an FE college, Adult and Community Learning Centre or Learning Provider and for those delivering work based training such as within voluntary, community, private and public organisations.
The diploma explores language development, acquisition and use, the barriers to language acquisition and development and the theories and principles of literacy learning. It then focuses on the learning and teaching of literacy through the planning, selection and development of approaches to language and literacy learning for a range of learner types.
Teaching practice is a requirement of this qualification.
There are several features of the award making it appropriate to the target candidates:
§ OCNW-devised assessment tasks designed to cover all the assessment criteria within the unit;
§ The assessment strategy, a combination of the Personal and Professional Practice File (3PF) and assessment tasks, is a distinctive and holistic approach to the assessment requirements of the Additional Diploma and highly relevant to candidates working or intending to work with language and literacy learners;
§ Centre-devised assessment tasks are permissible provided they are approved by OCNW before commencement of delivery;
§ Can be achieved by pre-service or in-service candidates.
